# Create a canvas
Source: https://docs.usepropane.ai/canvas/create-canvas
Start a canvas from a Space and work with the AI to shape your document
A **canvas** is where you develop a single idea inside a Space. Describe a problem, drop in context, and work with the AI to shape your thinking into a structured document. There is no rigid form — the direction emerges through conversation.
Canvases always live **inside a Space**.
## Create a canvas
Canvases are created from inside a Space. Type your intent into the prompt input box — describe what you are working on — and the canvas is created from that conversation.
See [Starting a session](/chat/starting-a-session) and [Approving the plan](/chat/approving-the-plan) for the full flow through to your canvas.

Edit your document directly or through chat in Propane
The canvas is the live, editable document that captures the output of your session. Once you approve the AI's plan, your document is generated and opens in the canvas alongside the chat. It updates as you work and can be edited directly or through conversation.
## Edit in the canvas
Edit directly in the canvas using standard formatting — headings, lists, bold, italic, and more. You can also give instructions through chat and the AI will make the edits for you. Both approaches update the same document. Undo and redo are fully supported.

# Eval
Source: https://docs.usepropane.ai/canvas/eval
Continuous scoring that measures how well your canvas is supported by evidence
**Eval** is a continuous scoring system that runs from the moment a canvas is created. It measures how well your canvas is supported by the evidence and context you have provided — and nudges you towards a stronger document.
Eval lives in a **drawer at the bottom of the canvas**. Click it to expand the full breakdown. You will see an overall readiness score, a status label, and a summary of what is missing. Below that, each dimension is rated individually — **Strong**, **Partial**, or **Weak** — with a short explanation of why.
Eval looks at: **Problem & Goal**, **Feature Scope**, **Technical Context**, **User Evidence**, and **Competitive Reference**. The score updates as you add more context or refine the canvas.

# Email & Link
Source: https://docs.usepropane.ai/distribution/email-link-distribution
Send invitations via email or share direct links with participants
Once you've created your research agent and added participants, you can distribute it through multiple channels. This guide covers email invitations, direct links, and walk-in access.
## Email Invitations
Email invitations are automatically sent from Propane when you add participants with the "Send email invitation" option enabled.
### What participants receive
When you send an email invitation, participants receive:
* A personalized email from your configured sender profile
* A unique link that tracks their specific session
* Any custom messaging you've configured on the landing page
### Sending invitations
When adding participants (manually or via CSV), check the **Send email invitation** option to immediately trigger the invitation email.
This is the most common method for bulk outreach after importing a CSV of participants.
If you initially added participants without sending invitations, you can trigger them later:
1. Navigate to the **Participants** tab of your research agent
2. Click the three dots menu (...) next to a participant's name
3. Select **Send Email Invite**
This is useful for staged rollouts or when you want to manually control timing.
### Email deliverability
Emails are sent from the sender profile you selected when you created the research agent. Make sure your sender profile is properly configured with:
* A recognizable sender name
* Your organization's branding (if configured)
Sending too many emails in a short period may trigger rate limits. Contact support if you need to send to large lists (1000+ participants).
## Direct Link Distribution
Every participant gets a unique session link that you can share through any channel you prefer.
### Copying session links
1. Navigate to the **Participants** tab of your research agent
2. Find the participant in the list
3. Click the three dots menu (...) next to their name
4. Select **Copy Session Link**
Use this method to send sessions through your preferred channels: Slack DMs, Intercom messages, SMS, or personal emails.
### Link characteristics
* **Unique per participant** - Each link is tied to a specific participant and cannot be shared
* **Pre-filled context** - The AI already knows the participant's information (name, company, NPS score, etc.)
* **Single use** - Once completed, the link shows the thank you message
* **No expiration** - Links remain valid unless you remove the participant
### Common use cases
Send via Slack, Teams, or direct message for high-touch engagements
Trigger via Intercom, Zendesk, or your customer support tool
Include in text message campaigns for mobile-first audiences
Integrate into your own notification systems via API
## Walk-in Distribution
Walk-in mode allows anyone to participate without being added as a participant first. This is ideal for open feedback collection.
Walk-in mode is only available for **custom templates** (not NPS follow-ups, which require pre-existing scores).
### Enabling walk-in mode
Walk-in access is configured when you create the research agent or can be enabled later:
1. Open your research agent settings
2. Enable **Walk-in mode** in the distribution settings
3. Participants will be prompted to enter their information before starting
### Walk-in vs. standard distribution
| Feature | Standard Invitations | Walk-in Mode |
| :------------------------------- | :-------------------------------- | :----------------------------- |
| **Participant pre-registration** | Required | Not required |
| **AI context** | Has full participant data | Only has what user provides |
| **Best for** | Targeted feedback, NPS follow-ups | Open feedback, website widgets |
| **Access control** | One unique link per person | One shared link for everyone |
### Walk-in use cases
* **Website feedback widgets** - Embed on your site for visitor feedback
* **Event QR codes** - Print QR codes at events for instant feedback collection
* **Public feedback forms** - Share one link via social media or other channels
* **In-store tablets** - Set up kiosks for customer feedback at physical locations
### Collecting participant information
In walk-in mode, participants are prompted to provide:
* First name
* Last name
* Email address
Once a walk-in participant completes the signup form, they appear in your Participants list just like invited participants.
## Best Practices
* **Email invitations** for formal, tracked outreach to known contacts
* **Direct links** for personal, high-touch engagement through existing channels
* **Walk-in mode** for open, public feedback collection
Use dynamic variables like `{{participant_name}}` in your landing page text to create personalized experiences, especially for email and direct link distribution.
Monitor the Participants tab to see who has:
* Received invitations
* Opened the landing page
* Started the session
* Completed the session
* Not yet responded (for follow-up)

# Embed a research agent
Source: https://docs.usepropane.ai/distribution/embed-interview
Embed research agents on your website or share them via link
## Getting started
How to prepare for embedding a research agent on your website.
This can be found in the URL when you are on the research agent page.
A publishable key is similar to an API key, only it is safe to be used on public websites.
Together with the publishable key, an allow list of domains acts as security measures to prevent the embed from being used on unwanted domains.
### How?
At the moment, a publishable key can be obtained by contacting us.
You can do this by reaching out directly in a connected Slack channel, or by sending an email to [developer@usepropane.ai](mailto:developer@usepropane.ai)
## Code snippets
Use any of the following code snippets to embed a research agent.
### Auto start
Using this code snippet the session will immediately load and render in the given container.
In addition a session will be created with the provided participant information.
```html theme={null}
```
Note that the fields in the participant object depends on the template type.
For a full list of fields please visit our [OpenAPI documentation](https://api.usepropane.ai/v1/docs#/default/get_or_create_interview_session)
### Manual start
Using this code snippet the session will only load and render once the participant information is explicitly set at a later stage.
```javascript theme={null}
```
Note that the fields in the participant object depends on the template type.
For a full list of fields, contact [developer@usepropane.ai](mailto:developer@usepropane.ai)
### Walk-ins (custom templates only)
Any custom research agent can be setup as an open walk-in session.
This means that anyone can manually sign up to participate.
To configure the embed to accept signups; replace the `participant` details with `walkin` property to explicitly telling the embed that signups are open.
```javascript theme={null}
```
### Text configuration
When embedding, you can configure various options such as text content.
If custom text content is not provided, the text content provided for the landing page will be used.
```javascript theme={null}
```
### Theming
Theme the embedded experience to match your brand identity.
```javascript theme={null}
```
The "LumenThemeName" is a set of different color themes for the agent avatar
Choose from the following themes:
* "Propane"
* "Serene Blue"
* "Sunset Orange"
* "Golden Hour"
* "Blush Pink"
* "Purple Love"
## Troubleshooting
Important security requirements and considerations when embedding on your website.
If your website uses a Content Security Policy, you'll need to allow the following sources:
* **script-src**: Add `https://cdn.usepropane.ai` to allow loading the Propane SDK script
* **frame-src**: Add `https://interview.usepropane.ai` to allow the Propane iframe (`interview.usepropane.ai` is the hosted session host)
Example CSP header:
```http theme={null}
Content-Security-Policy: script-src 'self' https://cdn.usepropane.ai; frame-src 'self' https://interview.usepropane.ai;
```
Your website's domain must be explicitly allowed. The embed will not load if your domain is not on the allowlist, even with a valid publishable key.
This security measure prevents unauthorized use on other websites. Make sure to provide all domains (including subdomains) where you plan to embed.
When embedding third-party scripts, consider the following best practices:
* The Propane SDK loads from a trusted CDN with HTTPS encryption
* The script creates an isolated iframe for the session content
* No sensitive data from your website is accessible to the iframe
If the embed fails to load, check for these common issues:
* **CSP blocking**: Check browser console for CSP violation errors
* **Domain not allowlisted**: Verify your with us that the domain is configured correctly
* **HTTPS requirement**: The embed must be used on HTTPS websites
* **Container element**: Ensure the target container element exists when the script runs

# Core concepts
Source: https://docs.usepropane.ai/getting-started/core-concepts
Spaces, chat, canvas, Signals, Connectors, and Integrations in Propane
These concepts describe how Propane organizes work and intelligence.
## Spaces
**Spaces** are shared workspaces that organize canvases and output by product area or initiative. See [Create a Space](/spaces/create-space).
## Chat and canvas
**Chat** is how you work with the AI inside a canvas: you describe what you are working on, the AI asks follow-up questions, and together you refine the plan. **Canvas** is the live document that captures the output — editable in place or through conversation. See [Starting a session](/chat/starting-a-session) and [Editing the canvas](/canvas/editing).
## Signals
**Signals** are a feed of product intelligence built from your connected customer data. Individual pieces of evidence are clustered into traceable signals. *(Growth plan.)* See [Where signals come from](/signals/where-signals-come-from).
## How they fit together
**Signals**, **Companies**, and **People** are three views of the same product intelligence:
* **Signals** show individual units of evidence — a recurring pain point, a requested capability, a trend.
* **Companies** show how those signals cluster at the **account** level — which customers are actually affected.
* **People** show the specific **contacts** behind that evidence — keeping product decisions grounded in real customer voices.
Together, they let you move from "we have seen this pattern" to "which accounts are affected, and who said it." See [Signals](/signals/where-signals-come-from), [Companies](/context/companies/navigating-companies), and [People](/context/people/navigating-people).
## Connectors vs Integrations
* **Connectors (MCP)** — Authenticated **per user**. Each person connects their own account to bring live context into a session (for example Notion or Linear). Configure from the composer or **Settings → Connectors**. See [Connectors](/settings/connectors) for how they work and setup guides.
* **Integrations** — **Org-wide** connections to tools where customer evidence lives. Once connected, everyone on your team benefits from ingested data for Signals, Companies, and People. See [What integrations bring in](/context/integrations/what-they-bring-in).

Create your account, connect your data, and build your first canvas in Propane
Propane helps your team turn customer evidence into product decisions — faster, and grounded in real data. This guide gets you from a new workspace to working in Propane in a few steps.
The **Free plan** includes full canvas access, unlimited users and Spaces, real-time collaboration, and MCP (Connectors) access. There is no limit on the number of users — the only restrictions are on locked features.
The **Growth plan** unlocks **Signals & customers** (Signals, Companies, People, Integrations) and **Research agents**.
## Create your account
[Sign up](https://app.usepropane.ai/signup) with your work email. Create a workspace for your organization and invite your team from **Settings → Team & Members**. See [Team and members](/settings/team-and-members) for details.
## Connect your data
Propane works without connected data, but the canvas and AI output are significantly stronger when grounded in real customer evidence.
* **[Integrations](/context/integrations/what-they-bring-in)** — Link Intercom, HubSpot, Attio, or other sources via Integrations. Data is shared across your whole team. *(Growth plan)*
* **[Connectors](/settings/connectors)** — Use an MCP connector to bring in live context from tools like Notion, Linear, or PostHog for your own sessions. Open **Settings → Connectors** in Propane to connect and manage accounts.
* **Paste in content** — Paste transcripts, research notes, or any text-based material directly into the prompt. See [Uploading files](/chat/uploading-files) for pasting and upcoming file uploads.
## Build your first canvas
Start by creating a Space. Then type your intent into the prompt input box — this creates a canvas and kicks off the conversation. The AI asks focused follow-up questions to understand what you are working on, then generates your document.
Go to the Spaces tab and create a Space for your initiative. See [Create a Space](/spaces/create-space).
Type your intent into the prompt — this creates a canvas from the conversation. See [Create a canvas](/canvas/create-canvas).
When the AI has enough context, approve the plan to generate your canvas. You can keep refining in chat. See [Approving the plan](/chat/approving-the-plan) and [Editing the canvas](/canvas/editing).

Turn customer evidence into product decisions with Spaces, AI chat, canvas, and research agents
Propane helps your team **turn customer evidence into product decisions**. The product has two layers. **Workspace** is free and open to everyone — **Spaces** for your projects, **Canvas** for documents that can call agents inline, **AI chat** across your sources, and **handoff to coding agents** when an idea is ready to ship.
Create your account, connect data, and build your first canvas
Spaces, chat, Signals, Connectors, and Integrations
Support and next steps when you are stuck
## Product workflows
Most work in Propane happens in **Spaces** and on the **canvas** — shared workspaces and a live document you shape with AI and your team.
**Spaces** group canvases and output by product area or initiative. [Create a Space](/spaces/create-space), [collaborate with your team](/spaces/collaborate) in real time, and manage the lifecycle of a Space when you are done — see [Delete a Space](/spaces/delete-space) when you need to remove one.
The **canvas** is where ideas become a structured document: you chat with the AI, approve a plan, and refine the canvas in place. Start with [Create a canvas](/canvas/create-canvas) and [Starting a session](/chat/starting-a-session), then dive into [Editing the canvas](/canvas/editing), [real-time collaboration](/canvas/real-time-collaboration), and [Version history](/canvas/version-history) as your work evolves.
## Next steps
The first three steps cover **Spaces**, the **canvas**, and bringing **customer data** into your work. Steps 4–7 are **optional** and focus on **research agents** (Growth): use them when you want to run structured sessions with participants beyond working with the AI on the canvas alone.
[Sign up](https://app.usepropane.ai/signup) and complete [Set up your workspace](/getting-started/setup-workspace) if you have not already, or see [Choose your path](/getting-started/choose-your-path). Then [create a Space](/spaces/create-space) and start adding content to it.
You land on the canvas inside your Space. Use chat to shape the plan and document — see [Starting a session](/chat/starting-a-session) and [Editing the canvas](/canvas/editing). You can also [paste or upload material](/chat/uploading-files) to bring context into the session.
**Connectors (MCP)** — Authenticate your own tools and pull live context into a session. See [Connectors](/settings/connectors). **Integrations** — Connect org-wide sources where customer evidence lives so your whole team benefits; available on the **Growth plan**. See [What integrations bring in](/context/integrations/what-they-bring-in).
### Research agents (optional)
These steps require the **Growth plan**. Skip them if you only need **Spaces**, **canvas**, and **chat** — you do not have to create a research agent to get value from Propane.
On the Growth plan, open **Agents** and [create a research agent](/interviews/create-interview). Choose templates like NPS follow-ups, Win/Loss, Churn Analysis, or custom templates.
[Add participants](/interviews/adding-participants) manually, via CSV, or from People — then send invitations or copy session links.
Use [email and links](/distribution/email-link-distribution) or [embed a research agent](/distribution/embed-interview) on your site.
Review AI-generated insights and dive into individual responses to understand your users better.

Learn how to add and manage participants for your research agents
**Research agents** are available on the **Growth plan**. See [Set up your workspace](/getting-started/setup-workspace) for plan details.
There are three ways to add participants to your research agents: manually, via CSV import, or from your existing Propane history.
Different template types may require specific data fields. For example, NPS templates require the participant's score and original comment to enable contextual AI conversations.
## 1. Accessing the Participant Menu
1. From the **Agents** page, locate the specific research agent card.
2. Click the **+ Add participants** button directly on the card, or open the research agent and navigate to the **Participants** tab.

### Option A: Manual Entry (Add New)
This method is best for adding individual users or testing the flow with internal team members.
1. Select the **Add new** tab.
2. Enter the **First name**, **Last name**, and **Email**.
3. **Additional Context Fields:**
* **Company:** The user's organization.
For NPS Follow-up templates, you'll also need to provide:
* **NPS Score:** Enter the specific score (0-10) they gave in the original survey. *The AI needs this to determine if it should treat the user as a Promoter, Passive, or Detractor.*
* **NPS Comment:** Copy the text feedback they provided (e.g., "Your product is great"). This gives the AI context to ask relevant follow-up questions.
4. **Invitation:**
* **Check** "Send email invitation" to have Propane email them immediately.
* **Uncheck** this if you plan to send the link manually (e.g., via Intercom, Slack, or SMS).
5. Click **Add participant**.
### Option B: Import from CSV
This is the standard method for bulk uploading a list of recent survey respondents.
1. Select the **Import from CSV** tab.
2. **Format your file:** Your CSV must contain specific columns based on your template type.
3. **Required Headers (Case Sensitive):**
You must use the exact header names below. The importer will not recognize them if they are capitalized differently.
```csv theme={null}
first_name,last_name,email,company_name
John,Doe,john@example.com,Acme Corp
Jane,Smith,jane@example.com,Beta Inc
```
For NPS templates, include these additional columns:
```csv theme={null}
first_name,last_name,email,company_name,nps_score,nps_comment
John,Doe,john@example.com,Acme Corp,9,"Great product, love the UI"
Jane,Smith,jane@example.com,Beta Inc,6,"Needs better support"
```
4. Upload your file.
5. Choose whether to **Send email invitation** automatically to all imported users.
### Option C: Select from People
If users already appear in Propane from earlier research agents or synced integrations, you can select them here.
1. Click the **Select from people** tab.
2. Search for the user by name or email.
3. Select them to add them to this specific research agent campaign.
## 3. Managing Participants & Invites
Once participants are added, they appear in your list view. You can manage individual users using the three dots menu (...) on the right side of their row.
| Action | Description |
| :--------------------- | :------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| **View Insights** | See the results once the session is completed. |
| **Copy Session Link** | Generates a unique URL for that specific user. Pro Tip: Use this if you want to send the link personally via a different channel (like a direct message or personal email) rather than the automated Propane email. |
| **Send Email Invite** | Triggers the standard Propane email invitation (useful if you initially added them without sending an invite). |
| **Remove Participant** | Deletes the user from this specific campaign. |

# Creating a research agent
Source: https://docs.usepropane.ai/interviews/create-interview
Learn how to create a research agent for your users
**Research agents** are available on the **Growth plan**. See [Set up your workspace](/getting-started/setup-workspace) for plan details.
Propane allows you to create conversational research agents that adapt to user responses in real-time. The AI agent drives dynamic conversations to gather deeper insights from your users.
## Step-by-Step Guide
1. Navigate to **Agents** from the sidebar navigation.
2. Click the **New** button in the top right corner.
3. Select your template type from the dropdown menu (e.g., **NPS Follow up**, **Win/Loss**, etc.).
Once on the Create page, fill in the foundational details:
* **Name:** Give your research agent a distinct internal name (e.g., "Q3 NPS Follow-up" or "New User Sentiment").
* **Language:** Select the language in which the session will be conducted.
* **From:** Choose the sender profile. This determines the name and email address participants will see when they receive the invitation.
This section controls the personality and focus of the AI agent.
* **Opening Message:** This is the specific hook the agent uses to start the chat. Propane provides a default, but you can customize it using variables like `{{participant_name}}`.
* **Advanced Settings > Additional Instructions:** This is where you define the "brain" of the research agent. You can tell the AI how to behave, what to prioritize, and what to avoid.
### Leveraging NPS Scores in Instructions
Because the AI agent knows the participant's score (0-10) *before* the chat begins, you can write conditional instructions to tailor the experience.
**Examples of Effective Instructions:**
| Goal | Example Instruction |
| :------------------------- | :---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Tailor by Score** | "If the user is a Detractor (score 0-6), apologize for the experience and ask what the one thing we could fix is. If they are a Promoter (9-10), ask them to describe their favorite workflow." |
| **Dig Deeper on Features** | "If the user mentions 'UI' or 'Design', ask specific follow-up questions about which buttons or menus were confusing. Do not settle for general answers." |
| **Manage Tone** | "Adopt a casual, empathetic tone. Keep the conversation short (max 3-4 questions)." |
| **Blank Slate Approach** | "Treat this session as a fresh start. Do not assume knowledge of previous conversations outside of the current NPS score." |
Coming soon: Specific guidance for other template types.
Configure the text that participants see before and after the chat:
* **Welcome text:** The message displayed on the landing page before the session begins.
* **Thank you text:** The message displayed once the participant completes the session.
You can use dynamic variables like `{{participant_name}}` in these fields to personalize the landing page experience.
1. Review your settings to ensure the instructions align with your goals.
2. (Optional) If you wish to offer rewards for completion, configure the **Incentives** section.
3. Click the **Create** button in the bottom right corner.
Once created, you will be redirected to the Agents dashboard where a success message will appear. Your new research agent will be listed in the grid, ready for you to add participants.

# Connect Mixpanel (MCP connector)
Source: https://docs.usepropane.ai/settings/connector-guides/mixpanel
Connect Propane to Mixpanel with a project service account—composer, Settings, Consumer role, and project ID.
This guide is for the **Mixpanel MCP connector** (per-user session context). It is **not** an org-wide **Integration**. For Context ingestion and Signals, see [What integrations bring in](/context/integrations/what-they-bring-in).
Propane connects to Mixpanel using a **service account** generated from your Mixpanel project. The setup takes about a minute.
## Where to find connectors in Propane
There are two ways to reach the connectors panel:
**From a chat session** — Click the **+** icon in the composer and select **Connectors**. A side panel opens showing every connector available in Propane. Find **Mixpanel** in the list to start setup.
**From Settings** — Go to **Settings → Connectors**. You will see the full list of available connectors, including **Mixpanel**. Click **Connect** to begin.
Both paths lead to the same setup flow. Once you have opened it, follow the steps below to create a service account in Mixpanel and connect it to Propane.
In Mixpanel, go to **Settings → Project settings**, choose the project you want Propane to access, and open the **Service Accounts** tab.
Connect **one project at a time**. Service accounts are scoped to a single project, so set up the connection for the specific project you want Propane to read from. If you want Propane to access multiple projects, you will repeat this process for each.
Name it something recognisable — `propane_connector` works well. This makes the account easy to identify and revoke later if you need to.
In Mixpanel, a service account's role controls what it can see and do in the project — Mixpanel's equivalent of scopes. Propane only needs to read from Mixpanel; it never writes back.
We recommend the **Consumer** role. This gives Propane read access to the data it needs without any ability to modify dashboards, change project settings, or affect anything else in your Mixpanel workspace. Avoid granting anything higher than Consumer unless you have a specific reason to.
When you create the service account, Mixpanel will show you a **username** and **secret**. You will need both to connect.
The **secret** is only shown **once**. Copy it before closing the dialog. If you lose it, you will need to delete the service account and create a new one.
You will also need your **Mixpanel project ID**, which Mixpanel displays alongside the service account details (and in your project settings).
Return to the **Connectors** panel in Propane (either via the **+** in the composer or from **Settings → Connectors**). Find **Mixpanel**, and paste in the **username**, **secret**, and **project ID** from Mixpanel.
That is it — Propane will start pulling context from your selected project on your next session.

# Connect PostHog (MCP connector)
Source: https://docs.usepropane.ai/settings/connector-guides/posthog
Connect Propane to PostHog with a personal API key—composer, Settings, scopes, and project access.
This guide is for the **PostHog MCP connector** (per-user session context). It is **not** an org-wide **Integration**. For Context ingestion and Signals, see [What integrations bring in](/context/integrations/what-they-bring-in).
Propane connects to PostHog using a **personal API key** generated from your PostHog account. The setup takes about a minute.
## Where to find connectors in Propane
There are two ways to reach the connectors panel:
**From a chat session** — Click the **+** icon in the composer and select **Connectors**. A side panel opens showing every connector available in Propane. Find **PostHog** in the list to start setup.
**From Settings** — Go to **Settings → Connectors**. You will see the full list of available connectors, including **PostHog**. Click **Connect** to begin.
Both paths lead to the same setup flow. Once you have opened it, follow the steps below to generate a key in PostHog and paste it back into Propane.
In PostHog, go to **Settings → Personal API Keys** and create a new key.
Label it something recognisable — `propane_connector` works well. This makes the key easy to identify and revoke later if you need to.
Choose which projects Propane can access. Under **Organization & project access**, select only the projects you want Propane to read from. We recommend scoping access narrowly rather than granting org-wide access by default.
Scopes control which kinds of data the key can read or write. Propane only needs to read from PostHog — we never write back to it — so we recommend taking the most restrictive approach that still gives Propane useful context.
There are two ways to set scopes:
Give the key read access to the data types you find useful for Propane to know about. Common picks include events, persons, insights, feature flags, and session recordings. Skip anything you do not want surfaced in your sessions.
Select PostHog's MCP server scope preset, then strip it back. Remove every write permission, and switch any data types you do not want Propane to see to **No access**. This is faster than building scopes from scratch and ends up in roughly the same place.
If you are not sure which scopes to grant, start narrow. You can always edit the key later to widen access as your team gets more out of the connector.
Copy the generated key from PostHog, then return to the **Connectors** panel in Propane (either via the **+** in the composer or from **Settings → Connectors**). Find **PostHog** and paste the key in.
That is it — Propane will start pulling context from your selected projects on your next session.

# Connect Salesforce (MCP connector)
Source: https://docs.usepropane.ai/settings/connector-guides/salesforce
Connect Propane to Salesforce with a read-only integration user—profile permissions, license choice, and OAuth.
This guide is for the **Salesforce MCP connector** (per-user session context). It is **not** an org-wide **Integration**. For Context ingestion and Signals, see [What integrations bring in](/context/integrations/what-they-bring-in).
Propane connects to Salesforce through **OAuth**. The cleanest setup is a dedicated integration user with read-only permissions — not an admin account. Plan for a few minutes in Salesforce Setup, then authenticate in Propane as that user.
## Where to find connectors in Propane
There are two ways to reach the connectors panel:
**From a chat session** — Click the **+** icon in the composer and select **Connectors**. A side panel opens showing every connector available in Propane. Find **Salesforce** in the list to start setup.
**From Settings** — Go to **Settings → Connectors**. You will see the full list of available connectors, including **Salesforce**. Click **Connect** to begin.
Both paths lead to the same setup flow. Create the integration user in Salesforce first, then return to Propane to complete OAuth.
**Your Salesforce admin may need to approve Propane on first connection.** Since September 2025, Salesforce blocks self-authorization for connected apps in customer orgs by default. An admin can pre-approve Propane in **Setup → Connected Apps OAuth Usage** — click **Install**, then assign a permission set or profile. This is a customer-side control; it cannot be bypassed from Propane.
In Salesforce, permissions are controlled via **Profiles** or **Permission Sets**. A cloned read-only profile is the simplest approach for a connector user.
1. Go to **Setup** → search **Profiles** → click it.
2. Find the **Standard User** profile → click **Clone**.
3. Name it something like **Integration Read Only**.
4. In the cloned profile, open **Object Permissions** and, for every object:
* Uncheck **Create**, **Edit**, **Delete**, and **Modify All**.
* Keep only **Read** and **View All** checked.
5. **Save** the profile.
If your org prefers Permission Sets over profiles, you can attach a read-only permission set to a standard user instead. The goal is the same: read access only, no create, edit, or delete.
1. Go to **Setup** → search **Users** → **New User**.
2. Fill in the details (for example, `integration@yourcompany.com`).
3. Set **Profile** to your new **Integration Read Only** profile.
4. Set **License** to **Salesforce** (this uses a full license seat) or **Salesforce Integration** if your org has it — the Integration license is cheaper and designed for API-only access with no UI login.
5. **Save** the user.
**Salesforce Integration license** — If your org has the **Salesforce Integration** user license available, use it for this connector. It costs less than a full seat and is intended for API-only integrations like Propane.
Salesforce sends an activation email to the integration user's address. Complete activation and set a password so the account is live and can authenticate.
Store the integration user's credentials securely. Anyone with access to this account can read Salesforce data within the permissions you granted.
Return to the **Connectors** panel in Propane (either via the **+** in the composer or from **Settings → Connectors**). Find **Salesforce** and start the OAuth flow.
When prompted, sign in as your **integration user** — not an admin or personal account. Propane will request only the access needed to read context for your session.
If OAuth is blocked on first try, ask your Salesforce admin to complete the Connected Apps approval above, then retry.
That is it — Propane will start pulling context from Salesforce on your next session.

# Connectors
Source: https://docs.usepropane.ai/settings/connectors
What MCP connectors are in Propane, how they work in chat, and step-by-step setup guides.
**Connectors** are **MCP connectors**: each person connects their own account so Propane can pull **live context into chat** in a session. They are **not** the same as **Integrations**, which are **org-wide** and power Signals, Companies, and People. See [What integrations bring in](/context/integrations/what-they-bring-in).
## What connectors do
Connectors let you bring live context from tools you already use into a Propane session. They are authenticated **per user** — each teammate connects their own account. Once connected, the AI can use that context while you work on the canvas.
## How connectors work in Propane
**From a chat session** — Click the **+** icon in the composer and select **Connectors**. A side panel lists every connector available in your workspace. Choose a connector and complete the setup flow for that tool.
**From Settings** — Open **Settings → Connectors** in Propane. You will see the same list of connectors. **Connect** or manage accounts from here without starting from chat.
Both paths use the same connector setup; use whichever is convenient.
### Supported connectors
Attio, HubSpot, Intercom, Zendesk, PostHog, Mixpanel, Salesforce, Notion, Linear
## Connector setup guides
Step-by-step instructions for tools that need extra setup (API keys, scopes, project access, and so on):
Connect with a PostHog personal API key, project scope, and read-only scopes
Connect with a Mixpanel project service account, read-only Consumer role, and per-project scope
Connect with a read-only integration user, Salesforce Integration license, and OAuth

How Propane builds product intelligence into Signals
**Signals** are available on the **Growth plan**. See [Set up your workspace](/getting-started/setup-workspace) for plan details.
**Signals** is where your product intelligence lives. A **signal** is a traceable unit of evidence pointing to something meaningful — recurring friction, a requested capability, a pain point, or a trend across accounts. Signals are actionable, not just informational.
## Where signals come from
Signals are built from source material Propane has access to: customer interviews, support tickets, sales calls, feedback tools, and other text-based materials. Individual pieces of evidence are called **insights**. Related insights are clustered together to form a signal.
