# Connect Mixpanel (MCP connector)

> Connect Propane to Mixpanel with a project service account—composer, Settings, Consumer role, and project ID.

<Info>
  This guide is for the **Mixpanel MCP connector** (per-user session context). It is **not** an org-wide **Integration**. For Context ingestion and Signals, see [What integrations bring in](/context/integrations/what-they-bring-in).
</Info>

Propane connects to Mixpanel using a **service account** generated from your Mixpanel project. The setup takes about a minute.

## Where to find connectors in Propane

There are two ways to reach the connectors panel:

**From a chat session** — Click the **+** icon in the composer and select **Connectors**. A side panel opens showing every connector available in Propane. Find **Mixpanel** in the list to start setup.

**From Settings** — Go to **Settings → Connectors**. You will see the full list of available connectors, including **Mixpanel**. Click **Connect** to begin.

Both paths lead to the same setup flow. Once you have opened it, follow the steps below to create a service account in Mixpanel and connect it to Propane.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Create a service account in Mixpanel">
    In Mixpanel, go to **Settings → Project settings**, choose the project you want Propane to access, and open the **Service Accounts** tab.

    Connect **one project at a time**. Service accounts are scoped to a single project, so set up the connection for the specific project you want Propane to read from. If you want Propane to access multiple projects, you will repeat this process for each.

    Name it something recognisable — `propane_connector` works well. This makes the account easy to identify and revoke later if you need to.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set the role">
    In Mixpanel, a service account's role controls what it can see and do in the project — Mixpanel's equivalent of scopes. Propane only needs to read from Mixpanel; it never writes back.

    We recommend the **Consumer** role. This gives Propane read access to the data it needs without any ability to modify dashboards, change project settings, or affect anything else in your Mixpanel workspace. Avoid granting anything higher than Consumer unless you have a specific reason to.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Create the account and copy the credentials">
    When you create the service account, Mixpanel will show you a **username** and **secret**. You will need both to connect.

    <Warning>
      The **secret** is only shown **once**. Copy it before closing the dialog. If you lose it, you will need to delete the service account and create a new one.
    </Warning>

    You will also need your **Mixpanel project ID**, which Mixpanel displays alongside the service account details (and in your project settings).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add the credentials to Propane">
    Return to the **Connectors** panel in Propane (either via the **+** in the composer or from **Settings → Connectors**). Find **Mixpanel**, and paste in the **username**, **secret**, and **project ID** from Mixpanel.

    <Check>
      That is it — Propane will start pulling context from your selected project on your next session.
    </Check>
  </Step>
</Steps>
